The fact that our beloved residence has now officially become part of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, complete with a restaurant by Yotam Ottolenghi, feels like a celebration of a shared vision: timeless beauty, exceptional service, and a deep appreciation for art and craftsmanship. The magnificent Amsterdam fan, specially designed for the opening by Studio DRIFT, was an extra gift to the city.
New energy – A new jewel
The arrival of Mandarin Oriental brings a new energy to the building—a refined international allure that perfectly complements our clients and our collection. Especially now that Yotam Ottolenghi has opened a restaurant within our hotel, it promises to become a culinary destination, adding even more temptation and sophistication to your visit.
To mark the unveiling of the Mandarin Oriental Signature Fan Amsterdam edition, Bonebakker designed a pendant featuring a multi‑colour sapphire set in 18‑carat rose gold. This specially selected fan‑shaped sapphire reflects the subtle colour nuances of the Mandarin Oriental Conservatorium fan in pink‑purple tones. Brilliant diamonds complete this exquisite piece.
Special Amsterdam Signature Fan
The Amsterdam Fan for Mandarin Oriental was designed by Studio Drift, the artist duo Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta, internationally acclaimed for installations that bring together nature and technology. For the Mandarin Oriental Conservatorium fan, they drew inspiration from the ever‑changing interplay of light, air, and water that so profoundly defines our capital. In Amsterdam, light is never static: it glides across the canals, paints the clouds in copper and gold, and transforms the city into a living stage that is constantly in motion. They translated that rhythm into a layered gradient of warm to cool tones — a quiet ode to the city and its light.
The materials of the fan are shaped by hand and applied in layers — an artisanal process. The result is a poetic, luminous symbol that captures the essence of Amsterdam and resonates beautifully with Bonebakker’s artistic world.
Unique piece of art
The Mandarin Oriental Conservatorium Signature Fan embodies the essence of the hotel, in which heritage and innovation come together. The monumental building, designed for the national Mail and Bank and later transformed into a modern grand hotel, froms a bridge between the past and the future. That layeredness is an important aspect of Studio DRIFT’s design, which is further explored in the structure of the fan, which contains seven segments. They represent the Seven Provinces of the Dutch Republic, the seven canals of Amsterdam’s UNESCO-listed canal district and the iconic seven Bridges of Reguliersgracht. The recurring number seven roots the artwork in the historic and cultural build-up of Amsterdam – a subtle detail which makes the fan a true city jewel.
